Alicante - what to see and where to go

One of the beautiful cities on the Costa Blanca in Spain that attracts many tourists from all over the world is Alicante. So what is Alicante famous for?

One of the main sightseeing is the Santa Barbara castle(Castillo de Santa Bárbara), a majestic structure 166 metres above sea level, located at the top of Benacantil Mountain. From this height, it offers stunning views of Alicante, the seaport and the Mediterranean Sea. The origins of Santa Barabara date back to the late 9th century, a period of Muslim domination. Consisting of three levels, the fortress still has many historical displays, which will be very interesting to look at and "soak up" the atmosphere of immersion in the past. Alicante Old Town, Santa Cruz neighbourhood(Barrio de Santa Cruz). Located at the foot of the Benacantil mountain, in the shadow of the Santa Barbara castle. It is a fascinating neighbourhood that locals call the heart of Alicante, which has survived the ravages of time. Walking through its narrow streets you will find colourful building facades, small white houses with many flowers and plants. A very atmospheric neighbourhood, a must visit.

Esplanada(Explanada de España) - a promenade and a favourite place for tourists and locals to rest. A very trendy place, full of cafes, boutiques, small shops for small things and more. You can also see street artists and entertainers here. The pavement of the boulevard is laid out in the shape of sea waves, which are made up of over 6 million red, blue and white pieces of stones. With a length of 500 metres, the boulevard runs parallel to the picturesque promenade on one side and the city itself on the other.

Alicante's beaches are some of the best on the Costa Blanca. The main beach destination is El Postiguet (playa de Postiguet), where you can sunbathe on sandy beaches and swim in the sea. The second most popular is San Juan (playa San Juan), it stretches for 7 kilometres and is very popular with tourists and locals.

Don't miss the wonderful Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante), where you can learn about the rich history and culture of the region. This museum is one of the most important in Spain and offers amazing exhibits including artefacts from ancient Roman settlements and fragments from the Bronze Age.
